Running In Seattle Update 20160418

April 18, 2016

Every few years, I look back and wonder, “how did I ever have time to do all those things in the past? I just am not able to fit those activities into my day anymore!”

That’s a repeat. I said it before, and now I’ve said it once more!

It has been a rough year for me personally, physically and mentally. My hip replacement surgery (last August) has helped, but I encountered additional pain that required a steroid injection. People tell me it does take awhile to recover from a major surgery, and I might have rushed things a bit. I’m still participating in road running events, sometimes walking slowly, but I may never run again.

Following the Seattle Marathon in November, I did complete the Valentines Day Dash, the Spring Hot Chocolate Run, and the SR520-10K. That’s all. I hope to do the Top Pot 5K this coming Sunday. And I have to get in shape for the June 18 Rock’n’Roll Marathon (already registered).

I don’t know if I will be able to keep up the Running Calendar or not. But now that Federal Income Tax Season is over (got my return done before the deadline), I’m going to try. We’ve got lots and lots of spring and summer runs coming up.

Every few years, I look back and wonder, “how did I ever have time to do all those things in the past? I just am not able to fit those activities into my day anymore!”

Somehow, I’ve complicated my life so much, adding stuff which I deem necessary, that I am able to work on fewer and fewer projects.Somehow, I’ve complicated my life so much, adding stuff which I deem necessary, that I am able to work on fewer and fewer projects.

Is it due to cognitive decline brought on by my advancing age? I don’t think so. People do not decline mentally with age. Scientists believe that the brains of older people appear to be slow because they know so much; it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have much more information in their brains. Much like a computer that struggles as the hard drive gets full, so too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are so full.

So here I am, back in catchup mode again. Do I need a New Year’s Resolution to keep the Run Events Calendar going?

Results Added (from way back in November):
Green Lake Gobble (5K & 10K, GreenLake Park in Seattle, Sunday November 22).
Seattle Marathon (26mi & 13mi, Seattle Center, Sunday November 29).

CALENDAR ADDITIONS:
Resolution Run (5K, Serious About Fitness in Redmond, Sunday January 3).
MLK Weekend Run (Magnuson Series 5K, 10K & 15K, Magnuson Park, Saturday January 16).

Running In Seattle Update 20151111

November 11, 2015

Only 20 days to the Seattle Marathon.  I took a stroll today, covering 10.65 miles, so I’m well on my way to experiencing sufficient training before the big event on November 29.  And I submitted my registration today, so I can’t back out now!  I had intended to walk only 9 miles for my practice run, but I’m really glad to have gotten in a longer distance — makes me that much closer to my training goal.

We have a brand new 5K run – the first annual Run Run Rudolph taking place on the University of Washington campus.  Donations benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The 7th annual K9 Candy Cane 5K benefits the City of Renton Community Services, with donated canned dog food going to the Seattle/King County Humane Society.

Run Results:
Run Scared (5K & 4K-Walk, Seward Park in Seattle, Saturday October 31).
Calendar Additions:
K9 Candy Cane (5K, Community Center in Renton, Sunday December 6).
Run Run Rudolph (5K, University of Washington Campus, Sunday December 6).

The Pacific Northwest Sports Weekend:

Seattle Beats Dallas.
— The NFL Seattle Seahawks beat the Dallas Cowboys Sunday 23-22.  The Seahawks get to .500 while the Cowboys drop to 2-5.

Seattle Beats Dallas — The NASL Seattle Sounders beat FC Dallas Sunday 2-1.  The two sides play again next Sunday to determine who goes to the Western Conference Finals.

University of Washington Huskies rout Arizona Wildcats, beating them up by a final tally of 49-3.

Washington State University Cougars lose to Stanford Cardinal 28-30.  With the clock running and only 15 seconds for the Cougs to get on the field and attempt the game-winning field goal, the shot went wide right.  Other than the loss, it was the Cougs’ best game of the season!

Three wins, one loss.

Back to the calendar, an addition:  the 4th Annual Rogers Reindeer Run to benefit the Rogers High School Performing Arts Music program.

Run Results:
Halloween Run Magnuson Series (5K & 10K, Magnuson Park, Saturday October 31).
Calendar Addition:
Rogers Reindeer Run (5K & 10K, Heritage Rec Center in Puyallup, Saturday December 5).

Running In Seattle Update 20151029

October 29, 2015

One month to the Seattle Marathon.  I wanted to be farther along in my training, but I did make it through a 7.6 mile walk this week, which is a little more than half the distance of a Half Marathon.  I made it without injury.  A few more walks in the next four weeks ought to do it.  How about you?  Are you ready?  You can register for the Seattle Marathon all the way up to the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  Of course, the fee goes up again after the next cutoff November 17.

Today, I am adding to the calendar:

(1) a brand new run Color Me A Miracle to benefit Children’s Uncompensated Care Fund.  It is a color run, where participants are splattered with paint.

(2) the 15th annual Hopelink Turkey Trot.  This organization provides help to families in crisis.

(3) the 2nd annual CATurkey Trot.  This organization benefits animal rescue groups.

Calendar Additions:
Color Me A Miracle (5K, Seattle University near downtown Seattle, Sunday November 8).
Hopelink Turkey Trot (5K, Marina Park in Kirkland, Sunday November 22).
CATurkey Trot (5K, Fall City — 5 miles north of Snoqualmie, Thursday November 26).

Running In Seattle Update 20151024

October 24, 2015

When I have a rough or busy week, I don’t get around to posting results or events as often as I should.

Last weekend was a rough one for our local professional sports teams.  That was so depressing that I couldn’t bring myself to do an update.  The Huskies and the Seahawks both lost.  The Cougars did come through with a win.  And tonight, how will the Huskies perform, as 16-point underdogs to Stanford Cardinal?

Day before yesterday, the Seahawks did come through with a Thursday Night Football win over the San Francisco 49ers.  The Hawk defense cashed in with 6 sacks.  But the Seahawks offense gave up 5 sacks of their own, so there’s still a LOT of work to do.

We had a nice time at last Sunday’s Dawg Dash.  Personally, I was able to successfully walk the 5K and had minimal after effects.  The results are posted here today.

Run Results:
Dawg Dash (5K & 10K, Husky Campus at University of Washington, Sunday October 18).

Running In Seattle Update 20151015

October 16, 2015

No matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to get ALL of the many runs listed for the holiday runs.  Sometimes readers chime in and ask, “Where’s My Run?”

Anyway, I’ve added the 37th annual Fowl Fun Run (a Thanksgiving event at Mt.Vernon), and the Reindeer Romp (a Christmas event at the Redmond Watershed Preserve).

Calendar Additions:
Fowl Fun Run (5K & 10K, Mount Vernon Christian School in Mt. Vernon — 33 miles north of Everett, Saturday November 14).
Reindeer Romp (5mi & 13mi, Redmond Watershed Preserve in Redmond, December 5).

Running In Seattle Update 20151013

October 13, 2015

Reminder – October 15 is the deadline on registration for several runs – in particular, prices increase for the Seattle Marathon.  Save $10 by registering within the next day or two.

The annual Holiday Run put together by the Arlington Running Club will kick off December’s Christmas events, with registration proceeds going towards the local Toys for Tots chapter.

The 12th annual 12K’s of Christmas holiday run showcases a revised flatter course this year.  The Cross Kirkland Corridor trail is now open, and both the 12K and the 5K will travel on a portion of the trail.

Calendar Additions:

Toys for Tots (5K, Stillaguamish Athletic Club in Arlington — 14 miles north of Everett, Saturday December 5).

Twelve K’s of Christmas (12K & 5K — with a new course, Heritage Park in Kirkland, Sunday December 20).

Running In Seattle Update 20151012

October 12, 2015

We had a glorious start to our long football weekend here in the state of Washington.  The University of Washington Huskies did a number on previously-ranked #17 University of Southern California Trojans, beating them 17-12.  Then the Washington State Cougars came through with a resounding upset of previously-(un)-ranked #27 University of Oregon Ducks 45-38 (Oregon was not ranked in the Top 25, but would have ranked #27 had it been a Top 30).  Both USC and Oregon have dropped out of the Top-25.

The weekend came to a very sad ending with the NFL Seattle Seahawks blowing a 17 point lead to the Cincinnati Bengals in O/T 24-27.

Well, let’s forget about football and look for more Jingle Bell Runs.  We already listed the primary Seattle Jingle for Sunday December 13.  Prior to that, half-a-dozen Jingle Bell Runs are available around the state beginning Saturday December 5 through Saturday December 12, with the final one on Thursday, December 24 in Tacoma.

Calendar Additions:
Jingle Bell Run Jingle Bell Run (5K, Burlington Visitor Center — 65 miles north of Seattle, Saturday December 5).
Jingle Bell Run (5K, Port Orchard City Hall — 21 miles west of Seattle by ferry, Saturday December 5).
Jingle Bell Run (5K, Riverfront Park in Spokane, Saturday December 5).
Jingle Bell Run (5K, World Trade Center in Portland, Sunday December 6).
Jingle Bell Run (5K, Bellingham High School, Saturday December 12).
Jingle Bell Run (5K, Wright Park in Tacoma, Thursday December 24).

Running In Seattle Update 20151010

October 11, 2015

I haven’t provided an update in awhile on my rehabilitation from hip replacement surgery.  I was coming along really well and last wrote on September 23, indicating that my progress was going smoothly.  Then I had a sudden relapse and my condition returned to where it had been about three weeks earlier.

At the same time, I’ve been gaining strength and this morning I participated in the Monster Mash Dash.  I did not do the entire 5K distance, but I walked two miles without trouble.  I’ve got to get in a 2.5 miler within the next few days, as that Husky Dawg Dash I signed up for is just a week away.  If you have not yet registered for that event, you still have an opportunity.  After the big Huskies football win on Thursday, you certainly want to be at Red Square next Sunday to show your support.

Run Results:
MicroSoft 5K (MicroSoft Campus in Redmond, Friday October 2).

Calendar Additions:
Jingle Bell Run (5K, Westlake Center in downtown Seattle, Sunday December 13).
Holiday Fun Run (Magnuson Series 5K, 10K & 15K, Magnuson Park, Saturday December 19).
