Well, I am back from a long running workout. Twelve miles total, with 8 miles jogging (no running). Didn’t plan on doing this workout until late yesterday, when I realized that I hadn’t yet registered for the Fremont 5K run. That was such a fun run last year with a record number of teams participating in the Briefcase Relay.
Thinking I would just register online and pay the $2.50 convenience fee, I changed my mind and decided to run the 5 miles from home down to Road Runner Sports to submit my registration by the noon deadline, and save that $2.50 fee.
Sorry, SignMeUp. You and active.com and GetMeRegistered provide a great convenient service for a modest fee, and my registering in person at Road Runner Sports deprives you of that income. However, from my point of view, if over time I save that little bit, I’ll have more funds available to register or donate to other events or causes.
So I ran, actually jogged, the entire 5 miles from home on Aurora North down to the east Green Lake area where Road Runner Sports and Super Jock’n Jill are located. Both of those popular sports stores have great locations right across from Green Lake, and I just love the 5 mile running route from home — it’s all downhill (all flat and a modest downhill slope). Yes, I still do not favor uphill runs, as it takes more energy. For the very first time since I had a surgical procedure back in November, I was able to jog the entire distance. Up until now, the most that I would let myself run was two miles at a time. Coming back home from RRS, of course, it was a little uppity, and I took it easy alternating jogging (75%) and walking (25%).
It usually takes me two or three days to recover from a hard workout, so I hope to be ready for the Fremont 5K, with 2½ days to rest up. I had been a little hesitant to go out today because it had been only 2 days since Race for the Cure on Sunday morning.
And that recovery time is probably going to keep me from participating in this year’s Shore Run. That event takes place on Sunday, June 28, the morning after the Rock’n'Roll Seafair Marathon on Saturday, June 27. Can I do a 5k one day after a long competitive run?
Regardless, the RNR is only 18 days away, so I’ve gotta get cracking. Wish me luck, please, and yourself too — those of you who are planning to head down to Tukwila for the beginning of RNR.

What a great time at the Fremont 5K Friday evening. Last year, they had a record 25 briefcase relay teams! This year about FIFTY! Wow!
After the events, Road Runner Sports gave away a certificate for a pair of new shoes to whoever showed that they had the rattiest shoes, one that was ready to go in the junk heap. That’s pretty nice, to wear a throwaway shoe and get a brand new pair.
And had you heard of the “I Beat John Curley” club? At every run he gives away $500 (and sometimes $1000) to charity. Runners who beat his time can put their name into a drawing and the winner gets to select the charity and gets a picture taken standing on top of a recumbent Curley holding a large replica of the $500 check.
Well, the Fremont 5K is over for another year, and I quickly learned that my training didn’t prepare me sufficiently. I walked much more than I would have wanted to, and much more than I should have. I was tired right from the beginning.
I think it must have been the warmth of the evening, at 65º, because this morning, I feel like running again, and usually I need a day or two to recuperate. That means my legs were not fatigued from the run.
It also implies that I didn’t try hard enough. So to make up for it, I’m heading out for a training run today. Just two weeks to go before the Rock’n'Roll Marathon.
